Before the First Night

An Invitation to Listen

“Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”Psalm 42:8, KJV

It is late. The house has gone quiet in the way only a house at night can go quiet. The refrigerator hums. A car passes somewhere far off, and then nothing.

Maybe you are reading this in bed with a single lamp on. Maybe there is a pile of envelopes on the kitchen table that you have decided not to open until morning. Maybe your mind is still running the numbers from the day, the way a wheel keeps turning after the cart has stopped.

This is a small book about a very old sound. It is about a harp that hung above a king's bed, a shepherd who played for a troubled ruler, a prophet who would not speak until he heard music, and a song that a whole people could no longer sing. It is about clay tablets that kept the secrets of ancient tuning for four thousand years. It is about the strange little gland in the center of your head that keeps time with the dark.

And it is about you, lying down tonight, listening.

What was lost

Here is a plain truth, and it is the heart of this book. The music of King David is gone.

His words survived. We still have the Psalms, and millions of people pray them every day. But the melodies, the tunings, the way his fingers moved across the strings, the exact sound that filled the room when he played for Saul: none of it was written down in a way anyone can read today. No recording exists, of course. No score in his hand exists. No instrument from his court is known to have survived.

The world kept the poem and lost the song.

That is what this book offers. Not David's music. Something older and more available than that: the practice of letting sound carry you from the noise of the day into the quiet of the night.

What you are holding

This book was written as a companion to The David Song, a seven-night listening program. Let us be clear from the first page about what that music is and is not.

The recording is new. It is an original piece of music, made in our time, inspired by the character of ancient lyres. It uses a plucked-string sound and a tuning built from pure fifths and fourths, the intervals that ancient musicians across the Near East seem to have prized. It is an artistic recreation, a tribute. It is not David's music, and nobody can honestly offer you David's music, because nobody has it.

So we will make you only promises we can keep. This book will tell you true stories, carefully sourced. It will show you where the tradition speaks and where the scholars still argue. It will give you a simple practice for each of the seven nights. And it will ask you a few good questions.

What happens in you as you listen is yours. Many people have found that a dark room, a soft sound and a quiet heart make a good doorway into sleep and into prayer. We cannot promise what you will find on the other side of that doorway. We can only hold it open.

How to read this book

You can read it straight through in an evening or two. Or you can read it alongside the seven nights, like this:

Before the first night, read this introduction and the first three chapters. They tell the story of David's harp and of two moments in Scripture when music came first.
On the nights in between, read one chapter in the early evening, well before you press play. Let the story sit in you while you get ready for bed.
Each night, turn to Chapter Eight, "The Ritual of the Seven Nights," and read only the page for that night. It is short. It is meant to be the last thing you read before the lights go out.
On the morning after the seventh night, read the final chapter. It is about waking up.

Keep a pen nearby. At the end of several chapters you will find a question and a few blank lines. Write in this book if you like. Write in the journal that came with the program. Write on the back of an envelope. What matters is that the thought leaves your head and lands on paper, where you can see it in the morning.

A word about the night

For most of human history, night was not a problem to be solved. It was a country to be entered.

People went to bed when the light failed. They woke in the dark and prayed. They watched the stars and named them. Shepherds sat up with their flocks. Psalmists wrote about lying awake and remembering God upon their beds.

“When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.”Psalm 63:6, KJV

These seven nights are a small attempt to take some of that country back. Not by force. By listening.

So turn the page. The story begins, as the tradition says, at midnight, with a harp and a wind.

א

Chapter One

The Harp Above the Bed

“Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.”Psalm 57:8, KJV

There is a story in the Talmud that most people have never heard. It takes only a few lines to tell, and once you have heard it, you may never forget it.

A harp hung above King David's bed.

At midnight, a wind came down from the north. It passed through the room and through the strings, and the harp began to sound by itself. And David, hearing it, rose from his bed. He studied until the first light of dawn.

That is the whole story. It is found in the Babylonian Talmud, in Tractate Berakhot, on the page numbered 3b. The teaching is given in the name of Rabbi Shimon Hasida, passed on by Rav Aha bar Bizna. The instrument the rabbis name is the kinnor, the lyre of ancient Israel, the instrument David plays throughout the books of Samuel. English Bibles usually call it a harp.

A question about midnight

The story does not appear out of nowhere. It comes up in the middle of a careful conversation, the kind the Talmud is famous for.

The rabbis are discussing a line from the Psalms in which David says that at midnight he rises to give thanks.

“At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.”Psalm 119:62, KJV

And they ask a lovely, human question. How did David know when it was midnight?

There were no clocks in his palace. The night does not announce its middle. The rabbis even point out that Moses himself, speaking to Pharaoh, said only "about midnight." If the greatest of the prophets spoke of midnight as an approximation, how could David be so sure?

The answer is the harp. David had a sign. The north wind came at the turning of the night, the strings stirred, and the king knew that the hour had come.

The verse that awakens the dawn

On the next page of the Talmud, Berakhot 4a, the rabbis ask where in Scripture this story is hinted at. They point to Psalm 57.

In the King James Version the verse reads, "Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early." In the Hebrew, the last phrase can be read more boldly: I will awaken the dawn. The rabbis heard in it a king who did not wait for morning to wake him. The harp woke first. Then David woke. And then, in a sense, David woke the dawn.

Dozing like a horse, rising like a lion

The Talmud gathers other memories of David's nights on that same page. One teacher, Rabbi Zeira, says that until midnight David would doze lightly, the way a horse dozes, never sinking all the way down. From midnight on, he rose with the strength of a lion.

What happened at dawn

The story does not end at sunrise, and the ending is worth knowing.

When dawn came, the Talmud says, the sages of Israel came in to see the king. They brought him the needs of the nation. The people needed sustenance. They needed a way to live.

The night of listening ended in a morning of very practical questions. Bread. Work. How a whole people would get through the year.

If you are carrying heavy practical worries into these seven nights, worries about bills or work or the people who depend on you, you are in good company. The king had them too. The tradition simply remembers that he did not bring them to bed in a panic. He brought them to the strings, and then to the dawn.

A legend, held with care

Is the story historically true? Did a wind truly play a lyre above David's bed three thousand years ago?

Nobody can say. The Talmud was compiled many centuries after David's lifetime, and the rabbis themselves often used stories like this one to teach rather than to report. The honest answer is that this is a cherished tradition, a piece of what Jewish teaching calls aggadah, the storytelling side of the Talmud.

But a story does not need to be a news report to be true in the way that matters. This one has lasted for more than fifteen hundred years because it says something people recognize. There is a sound that wakes the soul. There is an hour when the house is quiet and the heart can finally hear. And the instrument for that hour was, in the tradition's memory, a harp.

That same Talmudic passage, by the way, contains a small piece of wisdom that fits this whole book. Discussing why Moses said "about midnight," one explanation is that Moses wanted to guard against error, and the rabbis add a teaching: train your tongue to say, "I do not know."

We will try to do that in these pages. Where the tradition speaks, we will say so. Where the evidence is thin, we will say so. Where nobody knows, we will say, "We do not know." There is a deep rest in that kind of honesty.

Your own harp

But you can choose a sound for the end of your day. You can choose to let the last thing you hear be something slow and kind instead of something loud and anxious. You can let the strings speak first, and then let yourself be quiet.

That is all the first night asks. Not that you become a king, or a poet, or a saint. Only that you let a gentle sound mark the turning of your night, the way the tradition says the harp marked David's.

Write it down

What is the last sound you usually hear before you sleep? What would you like it to be instead?

Chapter Two

The Shepherd and the Strings

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.”Psalm 23:1–2, KJV

Before he was a king, before Goliath, before the crown and the palace and the harp above the bed, David was a boy in the hills outside Bethlehem, watching sheep.

Scripture introduces him almost as an afterthought. The prophet Samuel has come to the house of Jesse to anoint a new king. Jesse brings out his sons one by one, the tall ones, the strong ones, the obvious ones. None of them is chosen.

“And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep.”1 Samuel 16:11, KJV

The youngest. The one left outside. The one keeping the sheep.

Nights in the open

A shepherd's life in those hills meant long days under a hard sun. Long nights under more stars than most of us have ever seen. The sounds of animals shifting in the dark. The wind over stone. The danger of lions and bears, which David later describes to Saul. And hours, so many hours, of watching and waiting.

Scripture does not give us a scene of David playing to his sheep. We should be careful not to invent one and call it history. But we do know two things. He was a shepherd. And by the time Saul's servants went looking for a musician, David was already known as one.

A king who could not rest

The story of how David came to court is one of the most famous musical passages in the Bible.

“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.”1 Samuel 16:14, KJV

We are not told much about what Saul suffered. The text says only that he was troubled. Readers across the centuries have wondered whether it was fear, melancholy, rage, or something deeper. Scripture does not diagnose him, and neither will we.

What we are told is what his servants suggested. They advised the king to find a man skilled at playing the harp, so that when the trouble came upon him, the music might bring relief. And one of the servants already had someone in mind.

“Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.”1 Samuel 16:18, KJV

The first thing the servant names is cunning in playing, which in the English of 1611 meant skillful. The last is the LORD is with him. The skill of his hands and the presence of God are named in the same breath.

So Saul was refreshed

Saul sends for the boy who is "with the sheep." David comes to court. And then comes the verse that has echoed through three thousand years of music and prayer.

“And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”1 Samuel 16:23, KJV

Read the small phrase "played with his hand." No orchestra, no choir. One young man, one instrument, one troubled king. And the result: Saul was refreshed. The Hebrew word suggests breathing room, relief, a widening. As if a man who had been holding his breath could finally let it out.

What the story does and does not say

It would be easy to turn this verse into a promise. People have done it. They say music can cast out darkness, cure the troubled mind, fix what is broken.

But look carefully at the rest of Saul's story, and you will see that the Bible is more honest than that. Saul's trouble came back. In later chapters, while David was playing, Saul threw a spear at him. The music refreshed the king again and again, but it did not change the course of his heart. That was a matter between Saul and God.

So what does the verse teach, if not a cure?

It teaches that sound can make room. That in a troubled hour, a gentle and skillful music can give a person space to breathe. That relief, even temporary relief, is a real gift and worth seeking. And that the one who plays with care, with God beside him, can be an instrument of peace for someone else.

That is a smaller claim than a miracle cure. It is also a truer one. And it is enough to build a night around.

The shepherd's psalm

The most loved poem in the Bible bears David's name in its heading: "A Psalm of David." Scholars discuss what such headings meant and when they were added. But the tradition has always heard in Psalm 23 the voice of a shepherd who knew what it was to lead a flock to water and to rest.

Look at the verbs in its first lines. He maketh me to lie down. He leadeth me beside the still waters. The psalmist does not make himself lie down. He is led. He is given rest. You cannot grab sleep by the collar and drag it into your bed. You can only prepare the pasture, quiet the water, and let yourself be led.

Playing for yourself

Most of us know what it is to be Saul for a night: troubled, restless, turning the same fears over and over. Tonight you get to be David too. You are the one who presses play, dims the light and gives your own troubled heart a few minutes of gentle sound. That is not a small thing. It is a kindness. Let yourself receive it.

Write it down

When have you been refreshed by music, even for a moment? Where were you, and what were you carrying?

Chapter Three

The Prophet Who Asked for Music

“But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.”2 Kings 3:15, KJV

Picture a desert, a stalled army, and three kings with no water.

The story is in the third chapter of 2 Kings. The king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom have joined forces for a campaign. They have taken a long road around through the wilderness of Edom, seven days of marching. And now there is no water. Not for the soldiers. Not for the animals that follow them.

It is the kind of moment where everything has gone wrong at once. Plans made in confidence have run straight into a dry riverbed. People are thirsty. Leaders are frightened. Someone has to find a way through.

The king of Judah asks whether there is a prophet of the LORD nearby. There is. His name is Elisha.

The strangest request

The three kings go down to see him. And Elisha, the great prophet, the successor of Elijah, the man they have come to for an answer, does something nobody expects.

He does not begin with a speech. He does not pray aloud. He does not deliver an answer on the spot.

He asks for music.

But now bring me a minstrel.

And the Bible records what happened next with beautiful simplicity: when the minstrel played, the hand of the LORD came upon him.

Sound before clarity

The text does not explain why. It does not tell us what the minstrel played, or for how long, or on what instrument. It does not offer a theory of how music and prophecy are connected.

It simply places the sound before the moment of clarity. First the music. Then the word.

When trouble comes, most of us crowd the room with noise. Elisha cleared the room with music.

Make this valley full of ditches

What Elisha heard, once the minstrel had played, was surprising.

“And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches. For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.”2 Kings 3:16–17, KJV

Dig ditches in a dry valley. Prepare for water you cannot yet see. No wind, no rain, no sign in the sky. Only a word, and a shovel.

The next morning, the text says, water came, and the land was filled.

We should be careful here. This is a story about a particular moment in Israel's history, and it is not a formula. It does not say that if you listen to music and dig a hole, your bank account will fill. Anyone who tells you that is selling something.

But the shape of the story has spoken to readers for a very long time, and it is worth sitting with. First, quiet. Then, listening. Then, a practical action that looks almost foolish: preparing for what has not yet arrived.

Your dry valley

Maybe you are in a dry valley right now. Maybe the plan you made in confidence has run out of water. The money did not come in as expected. The job ended. The bills are on the table. The kings in your life are frightened, and so are you.

This chapter cannot fill your valley. No book can. But it can offer you the prophet's order of things, which is old and good.

Do not start with panic. Start with quiet. Let a gentle sound clear the room. Then listen, really listen, for the next right step. It will usually be small. It will often be practical. It may feel like digging a ditch in dry ground: making a phone call, writing a list, asking for help, preparing a space for something you hope for but cannot yet see.

Elisha's minstrel did not bring the water. The minstrel made it possible for the prophet to hear. That is the most honest thing music can do for you, and it is no small gift.

The nameless minstrel

One more detail, easy to miss. We do not know the minstrel's name.

Kings are named in this chapter. The prophet is named. Even the king of Moab, the enemy, is named. But the musician who played at the turning point of the story is simply "a minstrel." He comes, he plays, and he disappears from the page.

Like David's melodies, the minstrel's music is lost. Only its effect is recorded: when he played, the prophet could hear.

Tonight, let the music be your nameless minstrel. Let it play, and then let it fade, and see what you can hear when the room is quiet.

Write it down

What is your dry valley right now? If you could hear one clear next step, small and practical, what do you hope it would be?

ד

Chapter Four

Seven Strings

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”Genesis 2:2, KJV

How many strings did David's harp have?

It sounds like a simple question. It is not. The sources disagree, and the disagreement turns out to be one of the most beautiful things about them.

Seven, then eight, then ten

In the Babylonian Talmud, in Tractate Arakhin, on page 13b, there is a teaching in the name of Rabbi Yehuda about the instruments of the Temple in Jerusalem.

The kinnor of the Temple, he says, had seven strings.

His proof comes from a verse in the Psalms, through a play on Hebrew words that the rabbis loved. Psalm 16 says, in the King James Version, "in thy presence is fulness of joy." The Hebrew word for "fulness," sova, looks very much like the word for "seven," sheva. Read it the second way, Rabbi Yehuda suggests, and the verse whispers: in thy presence are seven joys. Seven strings, played before God.

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”Psalm 16:11, KJV

Then the teaching looks forward. In the days of the Messiah, Rabbi Yehuda says, the harp will have eight strings. He finds this in the heading of Psalm 12, which mentions the sheminith, a word that means "the eighth." And in the world to come, the harp will have ten strings. For this he points to Psalm 92, the psalm for the Sabbath day.

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.”Psalm 92:1–3, KJV

Seven strings for this world. Eight for the age of redemption. Ten for the world to come. (Retellings of this teaching do not always agree on the stages; the version here follows the text of Arakhin 13b as it is usually printed.)

The Temple musicians

The same page of the Talmud gives a glimpse of what Temple music may have looked like. It discusses a teaching that at least twelve Levites stood on the platform to sing during the offerings. One sage, Rav Pappa, connects that number to the instruments: nine of the lyres called kinnorot, two of the instruments called nevalim, and one cymbal.

Josephus and the ten strings

The Talmud is not the only ancient voice on the question. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, writing in Greek near the end of the first century CE, describes the instruments of David's time in his Antiquities of the Jews, Book Seven.

He says the instrument he calls the kinyra had ten strings and was played with a plectrum, a small pick. Another instrument, the nabla, he says had twelve sounds and was played with the fingers.

So which is right? Seven strings or ten? Plucked with a pick or with the fingers?

The honest answer is that we do not know, and probably there was no single answer. Instruments change over centuries. Josephus was writing roughly a thousand years after David. The rabbis of the Talmud were writing later still. Different instruments, different regions, different generations may all lie behind these descriptions. Archaeology shows that lyres across the ancient Near East came in many sizes, with varying numbers of strings.

The number that keeps returning

Why would a rabbi want the Temple harp to have seven strings? Because seven is one of the great numbers of Scripture. Once you start noticing it, you see it everywhere.

Seven days. The Bible opens with a week. Six days of making, and then a seventh day of rest. "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it," Genesis says. The first thing in all creation that God calls holy is not a place or a person. It is a stretch of time: a day of rest.

Seven lamps. When the tabernacle was built in the wilderness, its lampstand, the menorah, was made with seven lamps. "And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof," God tells Moses in Exodus. Seven flames, burning through the night in the sanctuary.

“And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.”Exodus 25:37, KJV

Seven years. In Egypt, Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dreams: seven years of great plenty, followed by seven years of famine. His wisdom was to prepare in the good years for the hard ones. It is one of the oldest lessons in Scripture about stewardship, and it is built on sevens.

“Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: And there shall arise after them seven years of famine.”Genesis 41:29–30, KJV

Seven days at Jericho. Before the walls fell, the people of Israel marched around the city once a day for six days. Seven priests carried seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day they went around the city seven times. Only then came the shout.

Seven songs for seven days. And here is one more, less well known and very close to our subject. The Mishnah, in Tractate Tamid, preserves a list of the psalms the Levites sang in the Temple on each day of the week. Psalm 24 on the first day. Psalm 48 on the second. Psalm 82 on the third. Psalm 94 on the fourth. Psalm 81 on the fifth. Psalm 93 on the sixth. And on the Sabbath, Psalm 92, the song of the ten strings. Seven days, seven songs. Jewish prayer books still include the "song of the day" in the morning service, a thread running back to the Temple courtyard.

Why seven nights

This is where the seven nights of The David Song come from.

One night for each string of Rabbi Yehuda's Temple harp. One night for each day of the creation week, ending in rest. One night for each lamp of the menorah, burning through the dark.

We want to be very clear about what that means. Seven is a tribute. It is a way of honoring the tradition that kept these stories alive. It is a shape for your week, a rhythm to hold onto. It is not a formula, and it is not a secret code. There is no hidden power in the number of nights that will do something to you that six or eight nights would not.

And at the end of the week, as in Genesis, there is rest.

Write it down

If your week had seven strings, what would you want each one to be? Name seven small things that make your life sound right.

ה

Chapter Five

By the Rivers of Babylon

“How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?”Psalm 137:4, KJV

There is a psalm that begins in tears beside a river.

“By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”Psalm 137:1–3, KJV

Of all the images in the Psalms, this may be the most heartbreaking. Musicians who had once played in the courts of the LORD now sit by foreign water. Their captors, half mocking, ask them to perform. And they cannot. They take the instruments they carried all that way and hang them in the trees.

Silent harps on willow branches. Strings moving only in the wind.

The first silence

The psalm remembers the Babylonian exile. Early in the sixth century BCE, the armies of Babylon took Jerusalem, destroyed the first Temple, the one built by Solomon, and carried many of the people away to Mesopotamia.

The Temple had been the great house of song. Scripture remembers David himself setting musicians apart for its service.

“Moreover David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals.”1 Chronicles 25:1, KJV

Now the house was gone. The courtyard where the songs had risen was rubble. The singers were in a strange land. How shall we sing the LORD's song?

The music returns, and is lost again

The exile did not last forever. Within a lifetime, the Persian king Cyrus allowed exiles to return. A second Temple was built on the same mountain. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah describe singers and musicians taking their places again, and the Levites' songs rising once more.

And then, in the year 70 CE, Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem and burned the Second Temple. It was never rebuilt.

With it went the Temple's musical life. The trained Levite choirs, the instrumental tradition, the exact way the psalms were played and sung in that place: all of it ended. In the generations that followed, Jewish communities chose, as an act of mourning, to set aside much of the instrumental music that had once filled the Temple's worship. Prayer continued, and chant continued, and the psalms were never forgotten. But the sound of the Temple, the sound David's musicians had served, fell silent.

Instructions nobody can read

Open the book of Psalms in the King James Version, and look at the small print above many of the poems. You will find strange words there, left untranslated.

To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith. That heading stands over Psalm 6.

To the chief Musician upon Gittith. That one is over Psalm 8, and appears again over Psalms 81 and 84.

In the middle of Psalm 9, after a line about the wicked being snared, there is an odd pair of words: Higgaion. Selah.

And Selah itself appears again and again, seventy-one times in the Psalms and three more in the prayer of Habakkuk.

What do these words mean? Here we must say it plainly: nobody knows for certain.

Selah may mean a pause, a musical interlude, a moment to lift the voice or the instruments, or a call to stop and reflect. Scholars have proposed all of these. None has been proven.
Sheminith comes from the Hebrew word for "eighth." Some think it named an eight-stringed instrument. Others think it meant a lower register or an octave. The ancient Aramaic translation leaned toward the first.
Gittith may connect to the city of Gath, or to the Hebrew word for a winepress. It might have been a tune, an instrument, or a style. We are guessing.
Higgaion seems related to a word for murmuring or meditating. It may have been a direction for a soft, thoughtful sound. Or something else entirely.

They look like notes left by musicians for other musicians. Directions for the chief singer. Signals for the players. Little doors into a world of sound whose keys were lost.

A word that asks you to stop

Many readers today take Selah as an invitation to pause and let the words sink in. We cannot say that is what it meant in David's time, but it is a lovely way to end a day. Think of tonight's music as a long Selah. A pause at the end of the psalm of your day. A space where the words stop and something quieter takes over.

Singing in a strange land

Many of us know something of exile, even if we have never left home. Grief can be a strange land. So can debt. So can illness, or loneliness, or a job that does not fit, or a season when prayer feels like speaking into a dry well.

Psalm 137 does not scold the exiles for their silence. It honors their grief. But it also remembers. The very next lines are a vow never to forget Jerusalem. And the people who sat weeping by those rivers did, in time, sing again. They carried their songs home. They wrote them down. Those same psalms are in your Bible tonight because, somewhere, a grieving person refused to let the words be lost.

The melodies were lost. The faithfulness was not.

If you are in a strange land right now, you do not have to sing tonight. You only have to listen. Let someone else's strings play while yours hang on the willow. That is allowed. That, too, is a way of keeping faith.

Write it down

Is there a "strange land" in your life right now, a place where it feels hard to sing? What song, prayer or memory would you most want to carry through it?

ו

Chapter Six

The Clay That Sings

“And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.”Genesis 4:21, KJV

David's melodies were never written down. But in the wider world around ancient Israel, some music was. Not on paper. In clay.

Long before David, the peoples of Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates, were writing on soft clay tablets with a reed stylus, pressing in small wedge-shaped marks we now call cuneiform. When the clay dried or was baked, the writing could last for thousands of years. Most of what survives is ordinary: contracts, letters, lists of grain and sheep. But among the tablets, a handful are about music.

They are some of the most astonishing documents ever found.

The golden lyres of Ur

Before we come to the writing, picture the instruments.

In the 1920s and early 1930s, the archaeologist Leonard Woolley excavated the Royal Cemetery at Ur, in what is now southern Iraq. Among the treasures buried there, around 2500 BCE, were lyres. Their wooden frames had long since rotted, but their decorations survived: gold and silver, shell and lapis lazuli. One of them bears a magnificent bull's head of gold with a beard of deep blue stone.

A tuning manual four thousand years old

Now the writing. From Ur, from the Old Babylonian period, roughly the nineteenth or eighteenth century BCE, comes a clay tablet that scholars catalog as UET VII 74. It was published by the Assyriologist Oliver Gurney in 1968, and it is one of the most important music texts of the ancient world.

It is a retuning manual.

The tablet describes an instrument with nine strings and a set of named tunings, seven of them. And it gives instructions for moving from one tuning to the next, one string at a time. Change this string, and the instrument is now in the next tuning. Change that one, and you move on again. Step by step, the musician travels through a cycle of seven tunings and comes back to where he began.

Other tablets from the same world list the names of the nine strings and name pairs of strings that form intervals. The scholar Anne Draffkorn Kilmer, along with others, argued that the system was built on fifths and fourths, the same pure intervals that later Greek musicians would describe. Not everyone agrees on every detail. Scholars still debate whether the scales went up or down, and how exactly to read some of the technical words. But the main picture is remarkable and widely accepted: nearly four thousand years ago, musicians were thinking with great care about tuning, and they wrote their method down.

The oldest song

Travel west now, to the coast of what is today Syria, to an ancient city called Ugarit.

In the 1950s, excavators working in the royal palace there found fragments of clay tablets. When the pieces were studied and joined, they turned out to be songs. Hymns, written in the Hurrian language, with something that looked like musical notation beneath the words.

They date from around 1400 BCE, several centuries before David. Most of the roughly three dozen songs survive only as broken fragments. But one of them, known to scholars as Hurrian Hymn h.6, is substantially complete. It is a hymn to Nikkal, a goddess of orchards. It includes instructions for a singer and for a nine-stringed lyre.

It is the oldest substantially complete piece of notated music yet found anywhere in the world.

And here is the part that makes it so haunting: nobody is sure how it sounded.

The notation names intervals and numbers, but the system for reading them is not fully understood. The Hurrian language itself is only partly understood. Small flakes of the clay are missing. Different scholars have produced different reconstructions of the melody, and some of them sound quite unlike the others. You can hear several versions performed today, each a careful, honest guess.

What the clay can and cannot tell us

We must be careful here, as everywhere in this book.

These tablets were made by other peoples, in other languages, for other gods. The hymn from Ugarit is not a psalm. The tuning tablet from Ur is not a page from David's songbook. Nothing in them tells us what David played.

What they do tell us is that the world David was born into was full of serious, thoughtful music. Lyres were ancient and honored. Musicians knew about tuning by fifths and fourths. They thought in cycles. They wrote things down when they could. When the Bible says that David was "cunning in playing," it is describing a man in a long and sophisticated tradition, not a boy strumming idly.

Holding broken things

Perhaps your life has some broken clay in it: a plan that cracked, a dream you can only half remember. You may not be able to put it back together tonight. But you can hold it gently, the way those scholars do. The clay sings a little, even broken. So do you.

Write it down

What is one "broken tablet" in your life, something incomplete that still matters to you? What can you still read in it?

Chapter Seven

The Eye That Watches the Night

“Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”Psalm 139:12, KJV

Deep in the center of your head, nestled between the two halves of your brain, there is a tiny structure about the size of a grain of rice. It is shaped a little like a pine cone, and that is how it got its name.

It is called the pineal gland.

The seat of the soul

In 1649, the French philosopher René Descartes published a book called The Passions of the Soul. In it, he made a famous and daring claim. The pineal gland, he wrote, was the principal seat of the soul.

His reasoning was simple and, for its time, clever. Almost everything in the brain comes in pairs, he noticed, just as we have two eyes, two ears and two hands. Yet we have only one thought of a thing at a time. So the soul, he reasoned, must do its work in some single place where the doubled signals come together. And the pineal gland, sitting alone in the middle of the brain, seemed the perfect candidate.

Descartes was wrong. Scientists today do not believe the pineal gland is where the soul meets the body, and Descartes had no real evidence that it was. But his idea was so vivid that it never quite went away. Ever since, the little gland in the middle of the head has carried a faint glow of mystery.

The keeper of darkness

What does the pineal gland actually do? The real answer, discovered in the twentieth century, is beautiful in its own way.

The pineal gland produces a hormone called melatonin. It was first isolated in the late 1950s. And the remarkable thing about melatonin is its relationship with darkness.

When evening comes and the light fades, the pineal gland begins to release more melatonin. Levels rise through the night and fall again toward morning. When bright light reaches the eyes at night, that rise can be suppressed. Signals travel from special cells in the eye, through the brain's internal clock, to this tiny gland. In a very real sense, it is a part of you that knows whether it is night.

This is one practical reason, among others, why the seven-night ritual asks you to dim the lights in the hour before bed and to put away bright screens. Not because we can promise any particular effect on your body. We cannot, and we will not. But because darkness is the natural setting for night, and your body has been listening for it longer than you have been alive.

The third eye

You may have heard the pineal gland called "the third eye." This is where the honest path needs extra care.

There is a real biological fact that sometimes gets pulled into the story. Some animals, including certain lizards and a New Zealand reptile called the tuatara, have a small light-sensitive organ on the top of the head, sometimes called a parietal eye. It belongs to the same family of structures as the pineal gland. In those creatures, it really does respond to light.

In human beings, the pineal gland is not an eye. It sits deep inside the skull and does not see.

The idea of the "third eye" as a spiritual organ comes from other places. Images of an inner eye appear in several of the world's religious traditions. In the late nineteenth century, some Western esoteric writers began to link that image to the pineal gland. Since then, the connection has spread widely in modern spiritual writing.

But we will not tell you that this music, this ritual or this book activates your pineal gland, opens your third eye or gives you any special power. There is no good evidence for that, and you deserve the truth more than you deserve a thrill.

Jesus spoke of the eye in a way that has nothing to do with anatomy and everything to do with where we fix our attention:

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”Matthew 6:22, KJV

A single eye. An undivided gaze. That is a kind of seeing worth cultivating, and it requires no gland to be switched on. Only a heart willing to look in one direction.

The great bronze pine cone

If you ever visit the Vatican Museums in Rome, walk out into the courtyard called the Cortile della Pigna. At one end, in a great niche in the wall, sits an enormous bronze pine cone, roughly four meters tall. It is called the Pigna.

Its story is real and remarkable. The Pigna is an ancient Roman bronze, made around the first or second century CE. It once served as a fountain, with water flowing from it, somewhere in the Campus Martius district of ancient Rome. A neighborhood of the city is still called Pigna today.

In the Middle Ages, the bronze cone was moved to the atrium of Old Saint Peter's Basilica, where it stood at the center of a fountain for pilgrims. It was so famous that Dante, in his Inferno, compared the face of a giant to it, as if every reader would know its size. When Old Saint Peter's was torn down to build the new basilica, the Pigna was moved again, in 1608, to the courtyard where it stands today.

On the internet, you will find many claims that this giant pine cone is a secret symbol of the pineal gland, a hidden message about the third eye. We want to say this plainly: that connection is a modern interpretation. It is not historical fact. The pine cone was a common decorative and symbolic motif in the ancient Mediterranean world, associated in various settings with fertility, abundance and renewal. There is no evidence that the Romans who cast it, or the Christians who moved it, intended it as a picture of a gland in the brain.

An ancient fountain has outlived the empire that made it and stood beside pilgrims for centuries. That is wonder enough, and honest wonder lasts longer than borrowed mystery.

He that keepeth thee

When you lie down tonight, you will close your two eyes. The tiny gland in the center of your head will go on with its quiet work, keeping time with the dark, as it has every night of your life. You do not have to do anything to it.

And above all of that, the psalmist says, there is One who never closes His eyes at all.

“Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”Psalm 121:4, KJV

That is the eye that truly watches the night. You can rest because it does not.

Write it down

What would it mean for your eye to be "single" this week? Where do you most want to fix your attention?

Chapter Eight

The Ritual of the Seven Nights

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8, KJV

Everything in this book has been leading here: to a room, a bed, a soft sound and you.

This chapter is meant to be used, not only read. Each of the seven nights has its own page, with a name, a short meditation, a verse to carry into sleep and one question to answer. Read only the page for tonight. Let it be the last thing you read before the lights go out.

Before every night

The same simple shape holds all seven nights. It is not complicated, and it is not meant to be perfect. If you miss a step, do the next one.

The shape of each night

Close the day. About an hour before bed, dim the lights. Put away bright screens if you can, except for whatever plays the recording.
Read tonight's page. Only this one. Slowly.
Write one sentence. Answer tonight's question in your journal. One honest sentence is enough.
Press play. Keep the volume low, softer than you think. Use a speaker or comfortable headphones made for sleep. Never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your attention.
Lie down and let go. You have nothing else to do. If thoughts come, let them pass like clouds. If you fall asleep before the music ends, good.
In the morning, write first. Before you check your phone, write a line or two: how you slept, any dream you remember, the first clear thought of the day.

A gentle word of care. This ritual is a devotional practice and a way of winding down. It is not a treatment. If you struggle with sleep night after night, or carry a heaviness that will not lift, please talk to a doctor or a counselor. Seeking help is not a lack of faith. It is often how help arrives.

The First Night: Rest

Menuchah

The Bible's first holy thing is a day of rest. Before there was a temple, before there was a priest, before there was a law, there was a seventh day, and God rested.

Tonight you are not asked to achieve anything. Not even good sleep. You are only asked to stop. To set down the tools of the day the way a carpenter sets down his hammer at sunset. The work will be there tomorrow. Tonight, it is not yours to carry.

As the music begins, notice where you are holding tension: your jaw, your shoulders, your hands. Let each one soften, one at a time, as if you were lowering something heavy to the floor.

“Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.”Psalm 116:7, KJV

Tonight's question

What is one thing I am choosing to set down tonight, and leave until morning?

The Second Night: Breath

Neshimah

In Hebrew, the word for breathing, neshimah, shares its root with neshamah, a word for the soul. In Genesis, God forms the first human from the dust and breathes into his nostrils "the breath of life," and the man becomes a living soul.

Every breath you take tonight is a small echo of that first one.

As the strings play, let your breathing slow without forcing it. Breathe in through your nose. Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath. You might silently say, on the in-breath, breath of life, and on the out-breath, I receive it. If counting or words feel like work, drop them. Just listen to the air coming and going, like a tide.

“Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.”Psalm 150:6, KJV

Tonight's question

When today did I forget to breathe? When did I finally exhale?

The Third Night: Memory

Zikaron

The exiles by the rivers of Babylon wept "when we remembered Zion." Memory can wound. But in the Bible, memory is also how faith survives. Again and again, the people are told to remember: what God has done, where they came from, who brought them through.

Tonight, as the music plays, let one good memory rise. Not a perfect one. Just a real one. A kitchen where someone loved you. A morning when help came that you did not expect. A time you got through something you thought would break you.

Stay with it. Notice the details: light, voices, smell, weather. Let it be a song in the night.

“I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.”Psalm 77:6, KJV

Tonight's question

What is one time in my life when I was carried through? What does that memory want to tell me now?

The Fourth Night: Dream

Halom

Scripture is full of dreams. Jacob saw a ladder. Joseph dreamed of sheaves and stars, and later read the dreams of a king. Dreams in the Bible are mysterious, sometimes meaningful, never simple.

We will not tell you what your dreams mean, and we will not promise that this music will give you any dream in particular. Dreams are not a way of reading the future. But they can be a way of noticing what your heart has been carrying.

Tonight, before you sleep, simply set the intention to remember. Put your journal and pen where you can reach them without turning on a bright light. If you wake in the night or in the morning with an image, a feeling or a fragment, write it down before it fades. Do not interpret it yet. Just keep it.

“I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.”Psalm 16:7, KJV

Tonight's question

What has my heart been quietly carrying this week, beneath the busy surface?

The Fifth Night: Asking

Bakashah

When young Solomon was given the chance to ask God for anything, he did not ask for riches or a long life. He asked for "an understanding heart." His request was specific, humble and wise.

Tonight is a night for asking. Not demanding. Not bargaining. Asking, the way a child asks a trusted parent.

Before you press play, write your request in one clear sentence. Make it specific. Vague fear is hard to pray about; a clear need can be named. Perhaps you are asking for wisdom about a decision, for a door to open in your work, for strength to make a hard phone call, for peace about money. Then, as the music plays, hold the request lightly in open hands. You have asked. You can rest now.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”James 1:5, KJV

Tonight's question

In one clear sentence: what am I asking for? And what wisdom would I need to receive it well?

The Sixth Night: Gratitude

Hodayah

The Sabbath psalm, the psalm of the ten strings, begins: "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD." Thanksgiving, in the Psalms, is not a polite afterthought. It is the gate into God's presence.

Tonight, before you press play, write down three things you are grateful for from the past week. Make them small and concrete. Not "my family," but "the way my daughter laughed at dinner on Tuesday." Not "my health," but "the walk I took in the cold air this afternoon."

As the music plays, return to each one and give thanks for it, silently, one at a time. When you run out, start again. Let gratitude be the last thought you hold as you drift.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”Psalm 100:4, KJV

Tonight's question

What are three small, specific gifts from this week that I almost failed to notice?

The Seventh Night: Wholeness

Shalom

We usually translate shalom as "peace." But the word is larger than the absence of conflict. It carries the sense of wholeness, completeness, everything in its right place. A shalom house is not just quiet. It is whole.

This is the seventh night, the night of the seventh string. Tonight, look back over the whole week. Read what you have written in your journal, slowly, from the first night until now. Notice what returned. Notice what changed. Notice what surprised you.

Then press play one more time, and do nothing at all. No request. No list. Just lie in the dark, held, as the strings play and slowly fade into silence. Let the week be complete, as the first week was complete, and let it end in rest.

“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”Proverbs 3:24, KJV

Tonight's question

Looking back over these seven nights, what is one thing I noticed that I do not want to forget?

ט

Chapter Nine

Awake, Psaltery and Harp

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:22–23, KJV

The seventh night is over. It is morning.

Maybe you slept deeply this week. Maybe you slept badly on some nights and well on others. Maybe nothing dramatic happened at all, and you simply went to bed a little earlier, a little more gently, seven times in a row. All of those are honest outcomes. None of them is failure.

Remember how the story of the harp ended. The wind came at midnight. David rose and studied through the dark. And then dawn came, and the sages walked in with the needs of the nation. Bread. Work. Livelihood. The night of listening opened into a morning of action.

This chapter is about that morning.

Read what you wrote

Sit down with your journal, ideally in daylight, with a cup of something warm. Read the whole week from the beginning.

Look for three things:

What repeated. Did one worry, one hope, one person or one idea appear on more than one night? Repetition is worth noticing.
What surprised you. A memory you had not thought of in years. A dream image that stayed with you. A thank-you you did not expect to write.
What asked to be done. Somewhere in those pages, there is probably a small, practical next step. A call. A conversation. A list. An application. An apology. A budget. A rest you have been refusing yourself.

Circle that last one. That is your ditch in the dry valley.

The forty-eight hours

Here is the one piece of practical advice in this book that we would underline twice. Whatever clear next step you found, do something about it within forty-eight hours.

Not the whole thing. Just the first part. Make the call. Send the email. Write the first line of the plan. Put the date on the calendar. Open the envelope you have been avoiding and look at the number honestly, in the light of day.

Joseph's wisdom in Egypt was not only that he understood Pharaoh's dream. It was that he acted on it. He prepared storehouses in the years of plenty. The understanding was a gift. The storehouses were work.

We cannot promise that any step you take will turn out the way you hope. Nobody honestly can. But a step taken is a step taken. It changes where you are standing, and from a new place you see new things.

When nothing seemed to happen

Perhaps you are reading this and thinking: I did all seven nights, and I did not notice anything special.

That is all right. Truly.

The psalmist knew that weeping may last through a night. He also knew that it does not have the last word.

“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”Psalm 30:5, KJV

Returning to the music

The seven nights are a beginning, not a finish line. You can return to them whenever you like.

Some people choose one night of the week, perhaps the eve of their Sabbath or day of rest, to listen again. Some return to the full seven nights at the start of a new season, or before a big decision, or after a hard stretch. Some keep only one piece of the ritual: the dim lights, the single sentence, the morning page. Any of these is good. Take what serves you. Leave the rest.

The song that remains

We began with a loss. David's melodies are gone. The Temple's music fell silent. The oldest notated song in the world can only be guessed at. Selah keeps its secret.

And yet.

The words survived. People kept them through exile and fire and thousands of years. The longing survived, too: the longing to end the day in God's presence, to wake in the night and remember, to let strings carry the heart where words cannot go. You have felt that longing this week. That is why you pressed play.

Perhaps that is the song that was never really lost. Not a melody, but a way of listening. Not a set of notes, but a posture of the heart, open in the dark, waiting for morning.

The tradition remembers a king who woke at midnight because a harp was playing. He did not sleep through it. He rose. He listened. And when the dawn came, he was ready to meet it.

Now it is your morning. The strings have played. Wake up, and live the day you have been given.

“Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.”Psalm 108:2, KJV

A blessing for the road

We leave you with the priestly blessing, the words Scripture gives the priests of Israel to speak over the people. It ends, fittingly, with shalom.

“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”Numbers 6:24–26, KJV

Write it down

What is the one step I will take in the next forty-eight hours? When exactly will I take it?

Notes and sources

All Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (Authorized Version), as commonly printed today. Where Hebrew verse numbers differ from English ones, the English numbering is used (for example, Psalm 57:8 in English is 57:9 in Hebrew Bibles).

Jewish sources

The harp above David's bed: Babylonian Talmud, Berakhot 3b, in the name of Rabbi Shimon Hasida, transmitted by Rav Aha bar Bizna. The discussion of how David knew it was midnight, the remark about Moses saying "about midnight," and Rabbi Zeira's saying about David's nights appear on the same page.
Psalm 57 as the source of the story, and "train your tongue to say: I do not know": Babylonian Talmud, Berakhot 4a.
Seven, eight and ten strings: Babylonian Talmud, Arakhin 13b, a teaching of Rabbi Yehuda, drawing on Psalm 16:11, the heading of Psalm 12 and Psalm 92. Rav Pappa's count of the Temple instruments (nine kinnorot, two nevalim, one cymbal) appears on the same page. Retellings vary in their details; this book follows the standard printed text.

About the music

The recording that accompanies this book is an original modern composition. It uses a synthesized plucked-string sound inspired by ancient lyres and a tuning built from pure fifths and fourths. It is an artistic recreation and tribute. It is not a reconstruction of any ancient piece, and it is not David's music, which has not survived.

This book is an original work of devotional and historical reflection. It is not medical, psychological or financial advice, and it makes no promise of any health, financial or spiritual outcome. If you have ongoing trouble sleeping, or struggle with anxiety or low mood, please speak with a qualified professional. The accompanying recording is an original artistic recreation inspired by ancient lyres; it is not David's music.
